YouTube has announced to launch a new feature under the name of “YouTube Shorts,” which is supposed to give competition to TikTok. Currently, it will only launch in India.
Chris Jaffe, a YouTube representative, writes in YouTube’s official blog: “Shorts is a new short-form video experience for creators and artists who want to shoot short, catchy videos using nothing but their mobile phones.”
Beta Version of YouTube Shorts
YouTube is going to introduce a Beta version for the users in India. They will have limited features, but the feedback will decide when and how to process the official release. The development process is still in progress, and some additional features will be included in the official release.
The Company intends to get honest feedback from the beta users so that they can escort further development. In its blog post, it writes:
“We’ll continue to add more features and expand to more countries in the coming months as we learn from you and listen to your feedback.”
Features of YouTube Shorts
With YouTube Shorts, the users can create and upload videos up to a time limit of 15 seconds. They can edit, crop, and add music to videos from the YouTube library. Moreover, they have the features of speeding up and slowing down the videos just as they like.
To record a Short, all you have to do is use the new “Create Icon” button in the YouTube app. The Short video will appear on the YouTube homepage in a slideshow specially designed for the purpose of publishing Short videos.
Users have the option to hop over to the next video by swiping vertically. The carousel not only contains the Short Videos, but the ordinary videos created with YouTube as well.
YouTube encourages users to use the new feature: “We encourage any mobile creator or artist to start uploading their existing short videos on YouTube today to start getting discovered.”

What may appear very normal is quite strategic to look upon carefully. YouTube Shorts is going to compete with TikTok, provided that YouTube will take advantage of TikTok because of having a greater audience. It’s worth noting that YouTube has launched this new beta features in India where TikTok is banned, and people are at bay.
